Visual Literacy - quite honestly I haven't heard the term before but I would say it is using images/ photos/art to communicate a feeling/a place in time without words.

I don't know what the textbook def. of visual literacy is, but I'd think it's the ability to look at something, see it from many angles, place it in context and understand how it would look in other contexts; processing visual cues, automatically analyzing the visual in many ways.

And "visual literacy"... wow, that's a new concept for me. When I think of literacy I think of one who is possessed of a broad familiarity with classic works of literature which enables that person to understand and create allusions, etc. So I suppose, in that vein, one who is visually literate would mean one who is familiar with the varied schools of art to an extent which enables that person to understand, and perhaps produce, works that fit into or allude to various artistic styles and classic works.

How would I define VISUAL LITERACY?
I suppose I see it as being able to understand (or read) the message conveyed in a visual form. Just as one might be able to read or recognize a few words from a page of a book, that does not mean you truly comprehend the meaning of the story... Just my two cents ;)

I've never studied visual literacy in any form, but in the most basic terms I would think that it means being able to comprehend a meaning from an image. Although one person's visual literacy will not be the same as the next person's.

To me, visual literacy is the ability to use language to discuss/describe the visual. Terminology such as space, chroma,texture, etc. Without first having verbal literacy, visual literacy may be hard to come by.

Well, for me, visual literacy is a good way to communicate with many people without using words - I think images are alternatively used instead of words because they appeal to a common "memory" among people, whereas words aren't so universal; am I clear enough? Sorry for my poor English...

Visual literacy... I would have to say to me it means to interpret the meaning of an image, piece of art, design, etc. without the use of words or an explanation. One example would be that of the drawings they found in ancient Egyptian tombs and pyramids. They were able to understand more about the Egyptians by their drawings.
